The History

The long history of Rocklin is intertwined with that of the transcontinental railroad. The railroad originally identified Rocklin as a travel destination in 1864, which was also the same time that granite mining began. In the same year, the Central Pacific Railroad built an expansion of its track from Newcastle to Secret Ravine in the southwest. It named the area Rocklin after its granite quarry. The site was used as a refueling and water stop.

By 1912, approximately 2,000 train carloads of granite were sent out of town to be used in the construction of the state capital and other structures in San Francisco.
