The History

The long history of Rocklin is intertwined with that of the transcontinental railroad. The railroad originally identified Rocklin as a travel destination in 1864, which was also the same time that granite mining began. In the same year, the Central Pacific Railroad built an expansion of its track from Newcastle to Secret Ravine in the southwest. ​​It named the area Rocklin after its granite quarry. The site was used as a refueling and water stop. 


By 1912, approximately 2,000 train carloads of granite were sent out of town to be used in the construction of the state capital and other structures in San Francisco.

The City of Rocklin aims to create a community that gives an extraordinary quality of life to its residents while keeping a small-town feel. Rocklin is known for its low crime rate and public safety and order. 


Although granite mining was a huge part of the city’s history, it officially ended in 2004. Today, top businesses in Rocklin include big multinational corporations and retail outlets. Other major employers in Rocklin also include the education and government sectors.

Rocklin schools include Rocklin Elementary School and Cobblestone Stone Elementary School, Spring View Middle School, Rocklin High School, Rocklin Academy Charter Schools, Maria Montessori, and Charter Academy. 


College-level students can go to Sierra College and William Jessup University in the city or the nearby universities such as California State University Sacramento and UC Davis.

Rocklin is divided into four districts: the University District, Granite District, College District, and Quarry District. Each district has its own environmental character and ambiance, which is characterized geographically by transportation, land use, and natural structures.
